ENTERPRISES

L Garrabrant Farms believes there is real merit in “farming like Grandpa did.” Not necessarily in the tools or methods of the past, but in the mindset and resilience that carried farmers through challenging times and allowed their operations to prevail. A key part of that resilience was diversity — and we’ve carried that principle forward into our business model today.

Our operation is strategically diversified across four enterprises: commercial corn, soybeans, wheat, and beef cattle. Within each enterprise, we pursue both horizontal and vertical integration strategies to add value — not only for our farm, but also for the end users of our products. This approach strengthens our operation, supports sustainability, and ensures we are well-positioned for the future.

Our farm operation

Commercial Corn

Our farm also produces GMO commercial corn, which we market primarily to end users. Much of our corn is delivered to Heimerl Farms for hog feed and Trillium Farms for chicken feed, with some also sold to ethanol plants. Currently, we haul corn directly to market at harvest.   Right now, we deliver soybeans straight to market at harvest, but we’re planning to build our own grain handling and storage facility. This addition will help us harvest more efficiently and give us better opportunities to market our crop.

Soybeans

Our farm produces GMO soybeans, which we typically sell into resale and export markets. Over the years, we’ve worked with buyers such as ADM, Cargill, The Andersons, and others across the state.  As with our corn operation, we plan to construct a grain handling and storage facility to improve harvest timeliness and open new marketing opportunities.

Wheat

Wheat

Wheat is an important part of our crop rotation. We plant it not only to meet the demand for straw, but also to allow time for late-summer farm projects, seed hay in early August, and add value through a wheat/straw/double-crop soybean rotation. Our goal is always to raise wheat that meets the strict quality standards of flour mills—delivering a product that can go straight to an end user.

Beef

Our operation spans the full cattle cycle — from cow-calf to preconditioning, feedlot, and finish. As we look to the future, we’re exploring ways to expand while also improving sustainability. One area we’re focused on is post-harvest grazing of crop residue and cover crops, weighing the pros and cons for our herd, our soil, and long-term profitability.
